Letter of Introduction

Out of all the learning outcomes for this course, three of them will be discussed in this introduction letter. All three outcomes have proven to be meaningful, with my definition of meaningful being helpful when writing or creating an effective piece of work.

The first outcome was to explore and analyze, in writing and reading, a variety of genres and rhetorical situations. An example of this is the difference between the two genres of a blog post and an academic journal when writing my source  based essay. The blog post had a goal of bringing in viewers and readers to in turn bring in money for the blog owner. This caused the rhetorical situation to be persuading. The academic journal was often more credible, and stated facts and test results. The rhetorical situation for this was more to inform the audience. This difference that a variety of genres have in rhetorical situations was acknowledged and that helped to establish credibility.

The second outcome was to understand and use print and digital technologies to address a range of audiences. Writing with a purpose is great, but in order to reach a desired audience, specific strategies and outlets must be used. More specifically, when creating my composition using two different genres, I wanted to address a wide range of audiences, both men and women, young and old. To achieve this, making a social media post seemed to be the best outlet to use. I understood that my desired audience uses social media, so I used a social media post to target them and do so effectively.

The third and final outcome was to locate research sources (including academic journal articles, magazine and newspaper articles) in the library’s databases or archives and on the Internet and evaluate them for credibility, accuracy, timeliness, and bias. Locating and evaluating research sources was done for both my source based essay and inquiry based essay. This was a crucial part of researching as it allowed me to get the viewpoints of different sources and assess whether those viewpoints were tainted in any way.
